Per a court order, HHS is required to restore this website as of 11:59PM ET, February 14, 2025. Any information on this page promoting gender ideology is extremely inaccurate and disconnected from the immutable biological reality that there are two sexes, male and female. The Trump Administration rejects gender ideology and condemns the harms it causes to children, by promoting their chemical and surgical mutilation, and to women, by depriving them of their dignity, safety, well-being, and opportunities. This page does not reflect biological reality and therefore the Administration and this Department rejects it.

Can I get or transmit HIV from…?
You can get or transmit HIV only through specic activities. Most commonly, people get or transmit HIV through sexual behaviors and needle or syringe use. Babies can also get HIV from an HIV-positive mother during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding. However, every exposure to HIV does not carry the same risk, and some sexual activities are riskier than others. Many factors can increase or decrease HIV risk. Also, there are many eective options  for reducing the risk of HIV infection.

Sexual Behaviors

Sexual activities carry dierent levels of risk for getting or transmitting HIV. Anal sex is the highest-risk sexual activity for HIV transmission. If you don’t have HIV, being a receptive partner (or bottom) for anal sex is the highest risk sexual activity for getting HIV. If you do have HIV, being the insertive partner (or top) for anal sex is the highest risk sexual activity for transmitting HIV. Activities like oral sex, touching, and kissing, are much less risky than anal or vaginal sex and carry little to no risk for getting or transmitting HIV.

Sexual Behaviors

What is anal sex?
Anal sex is when a penis is inserted into an anus. The partner inserting the penis is called the
insertive partner and the partner receiving the penis is called the receptive partner.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

People who inject drugs, hormones or steroids, or silicone can get or transmit HIV by sharing needles or syringes and other injection equipment because they may have someone else’s blood in them.
